Founder, Golf Improvements
The person behind Golf Improvements
Leonard van Nunen was born in 1972 and spent his early career as a consultant before the golf world pulled him in for good. In 2011 he founded Golf Improvements — the original vehicle for his ambition to help courses raise their standards — before joining Leading Courses as one of its earliest team members.
Since then he has reviewed nearly 900 courses across more than 30 countries, uploaded over 13,000 photographs, and built one of the most substantial independent track records in European golf criticism. His home club is Rosendaelsche Golf Club, one of the oldest in the Netherlands — founded in 1895 and home to the historic Oude 9.
Away from golf, Leonard is married to his German wife and they have two daughters. His personal goal is to complete his ultimate playlist of 381 courses drawn from 9 different world rankings. He has played 160 of them so far.
"Great courses deserve great experiences — consistently."
Current Projects
Mystery visits and guest experience consultancy for premium golf courses and resorts. Every visit is conducted by senior industry experts — no junior auditors. Where needed, Leonard and his team work hands-on alongside a club's staff to actually implement improvements, whether that means the website, the welcome process, the F&B, or the course operation itself.
golfimprovements.nlLeonard leads the global team of Official Expert Raters at Leading Courses — Europe's largest golf course review and booking platform. Expert Raters are highly active golfers worldwide whose reviews carry greater depth and weighting than standard user reviews. Leonard curates this group, organises international trips to reward their commitment, and oversees the quality of their editorial output.
leadingcourses.comSince 2017 Leonard has been an apprentice to Alan Rijks, one of the Netherlands' leading golf course architects. Under Alan's guidance he produces design drawings, joins site visits on live projects, and is building his portfolio towards the EIGCA Vocational Qualification in Golf Course Design. His completed projects include par-3 layouts, 9-hole redesigns, and a full 18-hole redesign. One of his most recent designs is currently awaiting client approval for construction.
alanrijks.nlFounded in 2025 together with Jeroen Korving, The Centenary is a non-profit digital platform for golf clubs that are 100 years and older. It modernises reciprocal play arrangements between historic clubs — replacing letters and secretary-to-secretary correspondence with a streamlined digital network. Members can discover reciprocal clubs, request visits, and clubs retain full control over availability and approvals.
thecentenary.co.ukCurrently in beta, Bucketlist Golf is a dedicated journal and tracking tool for the devoted golfer.
